When is a woman in Menopause?

Officially, a woman is defined as in menopause (i.e. going through menopause/peri-menopausal) when she is still having a period.

When you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months then you are deemed to be post-menopausal.

What test does a medical doctor do to find out if you’re menopausal?

Medical doctors usually just do an ‘FSH’ test – a Follicle Stimulating Hormone test.  If it is high it means that your ovaries are sputtering and not working very well.  This is an indication of menopause, but it doesn’t tell you where your oestrogen level is, for example!
